How I Ended Up In The Back Of A Cop Car

Let me tell you about my day. Because you're going to want to hear this.

Trust me, it's good.

I left my casa on the way to Las Vegas (refer to post below) at 7:30 a.m. I made really good time on the road and rolled into Page, Arizona at 10:30. I stopped, filled my gas tank, and went to the restroom. I held it for 2 hours, because I was trying to make good time.

So.... on my way through Page, just as I'm on the bridge at Lake Powell, I get pulled over. No biggie. I was probably going 7 over.See the Lake? So close.

The cop asks for my license and registration and goes to his car. He is taking a really long time. I'm just a little annoyed because he's throwing off my groove. When I'm driving somewhere, I have a schedule I like to stick to. I don't like it messed up, even for bathroom breaks. Which is why I usually go on the side of the road.

Anywhoo.... He comes back to my car and tells me that my license is suspended. I asked him if he was playing a mean trick on me, and that it wasn't funny, because it's not even April 1st. HE DID NOT LAUGH. He said my license was suspended because I had an unpaid speeding ticket from last August.

First of all, I know for a fact that I paid it (which I'm hoping is a computer glitch and to clear it up tomorrow) and second of all, I am a law-abiding citizen (besides occasional speeding), If I would have received anything in the mail, I would have handled it. Pretty sure it's a computer glitch. And, they said my license was suspended in October, to which I have never been notified.

Here is the kicker.... Officer then tells me that according to Arizona state law, they have to impound my car. This sent me into complete hysteria. They kindly let me load all of my stuff into the back of the police car and drove me to a hotel and NOT to the police station to get my mug shot and book me.
And here I am, in the back. Like a smooth criminal.

After talking to a girl at the hotel, I feel SO lucky. She said same thing happened to her, and in Arizona, it is a mandatory 72 hours in the slammer for driving with a suspended license. I am seriously counting my blessings.

But here was my next question, what was I going to do? How was I going to get to Las Vegas? I couldn't rent a car and drive there, BECAUSE I HAVE NO LICENSE! Because the cop took it. Awesome. Next plan, get a flight out of Page to Las Vegas. Oh wait. I don't have a picture ID to even GET on a plane.

After calling the police station for the kajillionth time to ask questions, they sent a police officer back to the hotel. He walked in and says, "Wow. You are high maintenance." Today, honestly? I couldn't have said it better myself, Mr. Officer. But thanks for taking away my car. I should have asked him for a foot rub while he was here. I'll show you high maintenance!

He gave me back my license so that I could get on a plane. He said, "I wouldn't drive if I were you." Meaning, if you get caught driving with your suspended license, we'll put you in a cell with Big Bertha. And take away your laptop.

Now I'm sitting here in the Best Western after having cried for almost 3 hours straight. I'm a lot calmer. 3 Advil later. And I've given the ladies who work here a real treat. Because not only am I using their free internet. I've cried on the phone uncontrollably most of the time. But now that I'm calm, we are friends. They've even offered me juice, and a room if I just want to go in and sit.

But... I'm still going to Vegas. My friends are driving 5 hours OUT OF THEIR WAY to Vegas to come and pick me up. I am so grateful for them. So grateful.

All in all, I'm a very lucky girl. I'm not in the slamma', I have an understanding husband, and have the best friends a girl could ask for.
