NYC: The Food

We weren't in the city for very long, (but judging by how much food we ate, you'd have thought we were there for weeks) but here are some places we ate at that we thought were the bomb.

Let me just start with dessert, because it's the most important. I was on a mission to find the best cupcake in NYC. I only went to 2 places, (I ruled out the crappy ones and didn't even bother going, plus we weren't there that long) and I tested the red velvet, because it's my fave. The winner for the red velvet was Amy's Bread. It was the closest to Nate's grandma's (which is my industry standard), so that makes it the winner.

But, if we are going for dessert in general, the winner was Magnolia Bakery for their famous banana pudding. It was so freaking good. I almost died of happiness and sweet overload right there on 49th Street. But then some bum would have jacked my stuff. That would have been no bueno.
Magnolia had reeeeeally good cupcakes too.

...

The first night we got into New York and got settled, we went to an oldie, but goodie, Angelo's Pizza. A fave of ours that was recommended to us by a bellman the last time we were in New York in 2006. We love their fried zucchini and eggplant with garlic yogurt dip and their margherita pizza. Yum....

We met up with my good friend Matt from college, and his wife Mary and their little girl Emma (who I wanted to steal) at Pop Burger for lunch. Nate saw it on Food Network. It was tasty.

The burgers were 2 cute little sliders, in a cute little box. I'm sure I looked super cute shoving them in my mouth. Hey, I was hungry. We walked a lot. There are 2 locations. We went to the one across from Chelsea Market, (in the Meatpacking District) where the Food Network Studio is located.

Speaking of Chelsea Market, it's super cool. Kind of like a food court/specialty shops type thing. There is an Amy's Bread there. Do yourself a fave and pick up a red velvet cupcake while you're there. Tell them I sent you. And they'll be like, "Who the heck is that?" And you'll be all, "I don't know, she just said you guys had good red velvet cupcakes." And then you'll pay full price for your cupcake, but it will be so worth it. Trust me.

...

On the night we saw Wicked, we didn't have reservations anywhere, so we asked the concierge at our hotel to recommend somewhere and then to get us reservations to somewhere good in the next 15 minutes. Well, he was the bomb and got us into Bobby Flay's Bar Americain. I couldn't tell you what we ordered, because I don't remember, but it was good and our server was really nice. I didn't see Bobby Flay actually cook my dinner in the kitchen. So, that was disappointing....

The only reservation we made, we made like, 3 months before we went to New York and that was to Peter Luger Steak House. Best steak I've ever eaten or will probably ever eat. Also seen on Food Network. Notice a pattern here? Yeah, Nate watches too much Food Network.
This is a steak for 2. Do you want to die? It's huge. We got ours medium rare. And I couldn't even eat my half. Because we also got the Peter Luger baconso thick and fatty and delicious and the Peter Luger tomatoes and onions
smothered in a little Peter Luger steak sauce . Yum.

But, they only take cash. FYI.

...

For lunch one day, we went to this halal cart by Penn Station on 34th street. Best gyro ever. It was like this Indian-curry gyro that knocked my socks off. Wow. It was the bomb.

...

Last but not least, one of the best/most interesting burgers I've ever eaten. Nate found this place to eat lunch at that was close. db bistro modern We walk up and it's pretty fancy and we all look haggard. And by haggard, I mean we look like tired ghetto European tourists, minus the European part. But we go eat there anyways. The food was awesome. My burger looked like this:

The burger consisted of: a Sirloin Burger filled with braised short ribs, foie gras and black truffles. It was served on a Parmesan bun & with pommes frites. It was so different but so good.

Don't worry In-N-Out, you're still my #1.

Are you hungry?
Do you want to go to New York?
Do you want to take me with you?

oh my holy deliciousness.

seriously, i want to eat everything in my house now but i know none of it will taste as good as ANY of this.

i love Chelsea Market...it just has a "good eats" kind of energy. and for some reason it all feels calorie free. but i have a special talent for making things calorie free...in my head.

I have a very odd attraction to Bobby Flay. And the fact that you ate at Bar Americain makes me want to light you on fire with my jealousy.

My other half has been dying to go to Peter Luger. So is it really worth it? I mean, he would honestly let me take him there for the weekend just to eat there, he's that excited about it. All the food looks yummy, though. When we go, I'm emailing you for tips.

Oh man, you just gave me a HUGE craving for the banana cream pudding, that is my favorite and my weakness, I would pass it on my way home from work and lets just say I ate way too much of that stuff, yum!

Awesome! The food looks like somthing from europe seriously...never seen anything like it. Just the food part was an adventure I'm sure! I am so jealous you got to see Wicked!! That has been my life long dream..well, maybe not life long, but you get the picture. I almost went with a friend to see it in chicago while I was in KY but it just never happened. Now here I am 2 kids later. Next time you go, call me...I'll have my ticket booked before you hang up!
