Let me just preface this post by saying that Alzheimer's is a really crappy, sad disease and I feel so bad for anyone that gets it. That being said, if our family didn't have a sense of humor about it, life around my grandma would be miserable and sad.So... here are some of the funny things Zola said this last weekend.
Zola to Grandpa Dean: Can we go home now?
Dean: We are home, Zola. There's nowhere else to go! This is it!
Or sometimes my aunt's would just drive her around the block, and then come back to the house.
Dean: Come on Zola, it's time for bed.
Zola: Sorry. I just don't feel right about sleeping with my uncle.
Speaking of Uncles, here are mine comparing who has more chest hair.
And back hair. Isn't our family awesome? Always finding things to do, even in Idaho... where the wind always blows, and so does the shopping.
All of my mom's siblings minus one.L to R: Randy, Pat (mi mamasita), Zola, Dean, Marlene, Nancy, John
ground: Lisa, she's not a little person, she's just kneeling.
I guess there was a joke that everyone got except Randy. What's that? Sorry, I couldn't hear you over Marlene's loud pants. Anyway, Randy and Lisa are closer to me in age than they are to my mom. That's how my grandparents rolled. Having kids well into their 40's. (My mom came close, having my brother when she was 37. Yikes! I'm done having kids by the time I'm 30. If we only have Brett by then, so be it.)
With the spouses.
Little Gwennie got her hands on the chocolate bars. Or the cow pies.
Matt. My favorite cousin/partner in crime. He's single you single ladies!
We think my grandparents house kind of looks like Napoleon Dynamite's house. But we love it.We also played a mean game of kick ball for like 3 hours. I was sore for two days afterwards. And I thought my grandma was the 80-year-old!
I love my family. They are so fun. And funny.
What do you love about your family?
Has anyone in your family had Alzheimer's?

YAY!! YOUR HOME!! Sounds like you guys had quite the shindig!
I totally cracked up reading about Zola and Dean! They could very well be some of the cutest grandparents I have ever seen! I love that she just doesnt feel right about sleeping with her uncle! Too cute!
Grants grandpa had Alzheimers (I never got the chance to meet him) but I do hear Grant talk about how it was really hard for him to see his Gramps like that, and they just had to make light of the situation.
Im glad that you guys had a good time! You will have to tell me more about your trip later!
My G-ma has early stages of alzheimers. You have to have a good sense of humor about it, Seriously! I thought my family were the only weird ones out there, that is until I meet some of Nolan's extended family! WOW!
sometimes I think I have alzheimers
my grandma on my dad's side.
it was sad, sad, sad. He can't even talk about it without tearing up.
Paul's grandma had a series of strokes leaving her with dementia like symptoms.
looks like genetically speaking we're screwed. But that's okay, we plan on going out at 86 in a horrific scooter accident on the freeway. that's right, we have our own suicide planned already.
That is SOO funny what your gma said about not going to bed with her uncle. You have such a cute family!
The closest experience I've had with anyone having Alzhueimers is watching 'The Notebook'. That is close enough, too. But I think you HAVE to find humor in a sad situation like that.
Welcome back Shar!
Now I understand that you got your great sense of humor from
Zola..."can we go home now???" and "I just don't feel right about sleeping with my uncle"...You have such a fun family!
Great pics!
My Grandma had alzheimers too. I was young so it was really hard to understand why she said such looney things. Looking back, the things she said were pretty funny too.
We would love to have you plan a party for us? We wish we still lived close so we could come enjoy your parties and awesome cooking!
